The Good Heart 

אָמַר רַבָּן יוֹחָנָן בֶּן זַּכַּאי לְתָלְמִידַיו, צְאוּ וּרְאוּ אֵיזוֹהִי דֶרֶךְ יְשָׁרָה שֶׁיִּדְבַּק בָּהּ הָאָדָם.  רַבִּי אֱלִיעֶזֶר אוֹמֵר, עַיִן טוֹבָה. רַבִּי יְהוֹשֻׁעַ אוֹמֵר, חָבֵר טוֹב. רַבִּי יוֹסֵי אוֹמֵר, שָׁכֵן טוֹב.  רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן אוֹמֵר, הָרוֹאֶה אֶת הַנּוֹלָד.  רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר אוֹמֵר, לֵב טוֹב.  אָמַר לָהֶם, רוֹאֶה אֲנִי אֶת דִּבְרֵי אֶלְעָזָר בֶּן עֲרָךְ מִדִּבְרֵיכֶם, שֶׁבִּכְלַל דְּבָרָיו דִּבְרֵיכֶם.

   

Once Rabban Yochanan ben Zakai instructed his five favorite disciples to go out into the world to discover what is the best quality a person can possess.  After traveling through the world, they returned to their teacher with their answers.  
    

The first disciple, Rabbi Eliezer, said, “I have traveled from town to town and from city to city and in all my travels I have found that the best people have an עַיִן טוֹבָה, Eyin Tovah, a good eye.  They look favorably upon other people and all things.  They express an attitude of acceptance and benevolence toward others.”
    

The second disciple, Rabbi Yehoshua, said, “In the course of my travels I found that it is not good to be alone.  People need other people and it is important to have good friends and companions.  Therefore, I believe that the best quality after which we should strive is to be a חָבֵר טוֹב , Chaver Tov, a good friend to all.”   

 

The third disciple, Rabbi Jose, said, “I did not need to travel far to learn that the most important thing we can be is a שָׁכֵן טוֹב, Shochien Tov, a good neighbor.  We need to live in peace with our neighbors, help them in their time of need, generously share our blessings with them and, together, build a feeling of shalom, of peace, in the towns and co

mmunities in which we live.”

 

The fourth disciple, Rabbi Shimon, said, “In my journeys I discovered that the best people are those who are הָרוֹאֶה אֶת הַנּוֹלָד, HaRo’eh et haNolad, those who consider consequences.  They look before they leap. They make considered judgements and one can trust their choices because they have thought about the ultimate results of their decisions.

 

Finally, the last disciple, Rabbi Elazar, spoke.  He said, “I journeyed into my soul and I discovered that the best quality any person can have is that of a לֵב טוֹב, Lev Tov, a Good Heart.”

But before he could finish speaking, Rabban Yochanan interrupted and declared, “Of all these answers, I prefer the words of Rabbi Elazar because having a לֵב טוֹב, Lev Tov, a Good Heart, means having all these qualities in one soul.”

INTRODUCTION

WHAT IS PRAYER?

    Prayer is our spiritual response to the world within which we live.  It is a way in which we express thanksgiving for its blessings, wonder at its majesty, concern for its troubles, fear from its uncertainties, anger at its unfairness, and hope for its amazing promise and possibility.  
    Prayer can be an intensely personal response or the shared expression of a community.  Prayer can be, as it is in this prayer book, rooted in a tradition or it can be a spontaneous expression of personal or communal spiritual energy.
    Prayer is often addressed to God, but to pray one need not have a clear idea of God.  Prayer is not theology, the philosophic expression of beliefs about God, but it can help us develop our ideas of God as we allow our hearts and souls to respond to the circumstances of life.  One also does not need to have had an experience of the divine to pray.  Prayer is not mysticism, the direct personal encounter with the One Who is Beyond All, but prayer frees us to experience the power of the One who is behind and beyond creation.
    While we often think that prayer consists of words, prayer can be any expression of our beings.  Song and dance may be prayerful.  Simple gestures such as lighting candles or sipping wine can be prayers.  A healthy laugh or a painful moan can be a prayer. Even a breath can be a prayer.  Any time we allow our spirits to respond to our world, we can utter a prayer.

 

WHEN TO PRAY
    One can pray anytime the spirit desires.  Jews are encouraged to say prayers at all times – when we wake and when we retire, when we eat or drink, when we remember old times and celebrate new ones, when we are afraid and when we are happy, when we are angry at God and when we are pleased with God.
    Traditionally, we gather for public prayer three times a day – morning, afternoon and evening.  Public prayer takes place in the synagogue, literally “the gathering place” or in Hebrew the Beit Kenneset.  Public prayer consists primarily of prayers of praise and expressions of communal issues although we do have an opportunity to express our personal concerns.
    While many pray, or feel it is important to pray, in a community three times a day, most of us gather for prayer on Shabbat and the Festivals.  This prayer book consists of the prayers that we at the Lions Gate, a continuing care retirement community, have found most moving and helpful from the traditional worship service for Shabbat and the Festivals.  

HOW TO PRAY


    It is not hard to pray.  The words in the prayer book are merely guides for our souls.  Many people find it helpful to follow the prayers closely.  Others enjoy the sound of the words even if they are not reading carefully.  Some people pray by singing and clapping.  Some people pray by asking questions or responding to all that is going on around them.      For many people, the hardest obstacle to prayer is the belief that it is essentially an intellectual activity.  They often believe that for prayer to work one needs to be able to read the prayers at least in English, if not in Hebrew, that one needs to accept literally the meaning of the words, and that one needs to exert control over one’s thoughts and feelings if they seem to go against the sense of the prayer.
    This is not correct.  Prayer is not an intellectual activity nor does it require a great deal of knowledge.  Jewish folklore contains many stories in which the prayer of the simple Jew was more powerful than those of the more learned.  The words, music, and movements in the service are to help us express our souls’ concerns.  Sometimes we will find them helpful, other times not.  That is not a problem.  In whatever we do, some days are better than others.  Regular attendance at worship services, however, helps train our souls to be free enough to express themselves.  Comfort grows from familiarity with a place and a service.
    Here at the Lions Gate we have an additional challenge.  Here we have people from all sorts of Jewish and non-Jewish backgrounds with all sorts of skills and abilities who join us in worship.  There is clearly no one right way to pray which suits every person attending our services or any service.  The biggest challenge is to be so open and comfortable in one’s own praying that one can allow others to participate in the service in their own distinctive way.

 

DOES PRAYER WORK?


    In theological terms this question is often asked as “Does God answer prayers and in which ways?”  That is a serious question and as our understanding of God grows and changes in the course of our lives, we will answer the question differently depending on where we are and the concerns and challenges we face.
    We approach the question differently on the spiritual level.  Here we are not looking so much for changes in our circumstances or philosophical explanations as we are for the ability to appreciate ourselves wherever we may be.  Prayer can help us express our souls concerns – pleasure or pain, courage or fear, hope or despair, joy or sorrow – and fit those concerns into our lives so that we can live more meaningful and purposeful lives.  This is expressed in the maxim, “Whoever leaves prayer a better person, this one’s prayer has been answered.”

    This prayer book grows out of twenty years of praying with the residents and staff of the Jewish Geriatric Home in Cherry Hill, New Jersey and its successor institution, Lions Gate CCRC.  In this way, it has been a cooperative effort.  I have learned much about prayer and life from the wonderful people who lived and still live there.  I hope that this prayer book honestly expresses all that I have learned.
    It also reflects my experiences as Jewish Community Chaplain for the Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey.  I have met many people in so many difficult and differing circumstances and they have all been my teachers.  The, too, have taught me much about prayer and life.
    I am also thankful for the continued support of my rabbinic colleagues, the members of the Tri-County Board of Rabbis, for me and for the chaplaincy program.  We are blessed to have a rabbinic community that fosters a high level of friendship and cooperation among its members that transcends denominational and ideological differences.  I particularly want to thank my predecessor, the late Rabbi Melvin Glatt, whose ten years of service to our community created the position in which I am now honored to serve.  His attempts to develop a meaningful form of worship for the seniors in our community have been the foundation of my work.
    I am also grateful for the love and support of my wife, Gail Trachtenberg, and my two children, Abby and Andrew.  They are truly the foundation of my life and my work.
    Finally, I want to thank all those in the community who worked so hard and lovingly to support the Jewish Geriatric Home and, now, work even more diligently to build and support Lions Gate.  This prayer book is a tribute to the financial support of generous donors, the fund raising efforts of our Auxiliary, the limitless hours of compassionate care offered by our volunteers, the loving attention of the family members and friends of our residents and the exceptional work of all the members of our staff.  With people like these in our community, we can honestly say, “Our prayers are answered.”

How beautiful are your tents O Jacob, your dwelling places, O Israel.  By Your abounding kindness, Dear God, I come into Your house.  With reverence I worship in Your holy sanctuary.  Dear God, I love Your dwelling, the place where Your glory abides.  In the presence of my Eternal Creator, I bow low, bend my knee and count my blessings.  As for me, I will pray to You, Dear God, at a desirable time.  O God by Your great love answer me with Your saving truth.

Dear God, the soul which You have given me is a pure one!  You have created it, formed it, breathed it into me, and sustain it within me.  Though I know that there will come a day when You will take it away from me I trust that You will restore it to me in a future yet unkown.  So long as I have breath, I will give thanks to You, O Eternal One, my God and God of all Ages, Source of all Creation, Creator of all Souls.  Blessed are You, Eternal One, who restores life to mortal creatures.

Dear God, give me the strength to rise in the morning and to welcome each day with joy.

When I feel down and unimportant, remind me of the glory of our people.

When I feel weak and frail, bless me with strength and courage.

When all I want to do is sleep, stir my soul and touch my spirit so that I wake up to the blessings of the day 
and the joy of being part of Your world.

The soul of every living being will bless Your name, O Eternal One, our God and the spirit of all creatures forever will extol and exalt Your name Our Heavenly Ruler.  From one world to the next You are God and besides You we have no sovereign, redeemer, and deliverer who saves, rescues, sustains and showers us with compassion at every moment of trouble and distress.  We have no other sovereign but You.

הָאֵל בְּתַעֲצֻמוֹת עֻזֶּֽךָ, הַגָּדוֹל בִּכְבוֹד שְׁמֶֽךָ. הַגִּבּוֹר לָנֶֽצַח וְהַנּוֹרָא בְּנוֹרְאוֹתֶֽיךָ. הַמֶּֽלֶךְ הַיּוֹשֵׁב עַל כִּסֵּא רָם וְנִשָּׂא:

You are God.  Your power is overwhelming.
You are known as “The One whose Greatness is Glorious.”
You are our eternal hero.  You are awesome in Your majesty.
You are our Ruler who sits on a high and exalted throne.

שוכן עד / SHOCHAIN AD

 

שׁוֹכֵן עַד, מָרוֹם וְקָדוֹש שְׁמוֹ: וְכָתוּב, 
רַנְּנוּ צַדִּיקִים בַּיְיָ, לַיְשָׁרִים נָאוָה תְהִלָּה.

 

Shochein ad, marom v'kadosh sh'mo. V'chatuv,

ran'nu tzadikim b'Adonai, laysharim navah t'hilah.

    

You who abide forever, Exalted and Holy is Your name.  

It is Your psalmist who declared:  

“Let the righteous sing before the Eternal One.  

Let the upright offer praise.” (Psalm 33:1)

ישתבח / YISHTABACH

יִשְׁתַּבַּח שִׁמְךָ לָעַד מַלְכֵּנוּ, הָאֵל הַמֶּֽלֶךְ הַגָּדוֹל וְהַקָּדוֹשׁ בַּשָּׁמַיִם וּבָאָֽרֶץ. כִּי לְךָ נָאֶה, יְיָ אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ וֵאלֹהֵי אֲבוֹתֵֽינוּ: שִׁיר וּשְׁבָחָה, הַלֵּל וְזִמְרָה, עֹז וּמֶמְשָׁלָה, נֶֽצַח, גְּדֻלָּה וּגְבוּרָה, תְּהִלָּה וְתִפְאֶֽרֶת, קְדֻשָּׁה וּמַלְכוּת.

 

Yishtabach shimcha la-ad malkeinu, ha-eil hamelech hagadol v'hakadosh bashamayim uva-aretz. Ki l'cha na-eh, Adonai eloheinu veilohei avoteinu, shir ush'vachah, haleil v'zimrah, oz umemshalah, netzach, g'dulah ug'vurah, t'hilah v'tiferet, k'dushah umalchut.

B'rachot v'hoda-ot mei-atah v'ad olam. Baruch atah Adonai, eil melech gadol batishbachot, eil hahoda-ot, adon hanifla-ot, habocheir b'shirei zimrah, melech, eil, chei ha-olamim.

 

You, who are our Sovereign,
May Your name be praised forever.
You, who are our Divine Ruler,
Are the One who is great and holy in heaven and upon the earth.

A hymn:

To God who is Sovereign over all the was formed,
To the Blessed One, blessed by every soul.
To the One whose greatness and goodness fill the universe
Aמג round whom knowledge and understanding revolve.

To the God who is exalted over the heaven’s Holy Beings
And whose glorious presence rests on the divine throne.
Before whose seat purity and righteousness stand 
And in whose glorious presence compassion and mercy appear.

The heavenly lights that our God created are good
Endowed them with knowledge, discernment and insight
Graced them with strength and power
To be guides over all the globe contains.

Filled with radiance, dispensing light
Their pleasing brightness pervades creation’s expanse,
They are joyous when they rise,
And exultant when they set,
Fulfilling with awe their Creator’s will.

Majesty and honor they bring to God’s holy name
Exultation and song to God’s dominion’s renown.
God summoned the sun and it shown forth light
God saw and established shape of the moon.

So all Heaven’s Array offer God praise 
The Seraphim, the Ofanim and the Holy Beings God’s splendor and greatness proclaim.

L'eil baruch n'imot yiteinu, l'melech eil chai v'kayam z'mirot yomeiru v'tishbachot yashmiu, ki hu l'vado poeil g'vurot, oseh chadashot, ba-al milchamot, zorei-a tz'dakot, matzmi-ach y'shuot, borei r'fuot, nora t'hilot, adon hanifla-ot, hamchadeish b'tuvo b'chol yom tamid ma-aseih v'reishit. Ka-amur, l'oseih orim g'dolim, ki l'olam chasdo.

  

What does God do to deserve the angels’ praises?  Where do we encounter the power and presence of the Most High?


The One Alone In Holiness appears in acts of heroism, in moments of discovery, in the heart of struggle, in the spreading of justice, in the fruits of victory, in the midst of healing, and in moments of awe and praise.


God is the master of wonders, the One whose goodness renews daily the mystery of creation as it is said in the Psalms, “God is the one who makes the great lights, the One whose love and loyalty abide forever.” (Psalm 136:7)

אוֹר חָדָשׁ עַל צִיּוֹן תָּאִיר וְנִזְכֶּה כֻלָּֽנוּ מְהֵרָה לְאוֹרוֹ: בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ יוֹצֵר הַמְּאוֹרוֹת:

Or chadash al tziyon tair, v'nizkeh chulanu m'heirah l'oro. Baruch atah Adonai, yotzeir ham'orot.

    

May a new light shine upon Zion and may we all be worthy to bask in its light. Blessed are You, Dear God, creator of light.

Ahavah rabah ahavtanu, Adonai eloheinu, chemlah g'dolah viteirah chamalta aleinu. Avinu malkeinu, ba-avur avoteinu shebat'chu v'cha, vat'lam'deim chukei chayim, kein t'chaneinu ut'lam'deinu. Avinu, ha-av harachaman, hamracheim, racheim aleinu, v'tein b'libeinu l'havin ul'haskil, lishmoa, lilmod ul'lameid, lishmor v'la-asot ul'kayeim et kol divrei talmud toratecha b'ahavah.

Dear God, You have loved us with a great love and with abounding compassion You have cared for us.  Our Source, our Sovereign, for the sake of our ancestors who trusted in You and to whom You taught the laws of life, be gracious to us and teach us as well.  Our nurturing Source, the Fountain of Compassion, the Merciful One, deal kindly with us and place within our hearts the desire to understand and to perceive, to listen, to learn and to teach, to keep and to do and to fulfill all the insights that come from the study of Your Torah with love.

וְהָאֵר עֵינֵֽינוּ בְּתוֹרָתֶֽךָ, וְדַבֵּק לִבֵּֽנוּ בְּמִצְוֹתֶֽיךָ, וְיַחֵד לְבָבֵֽנוּ לְאַהֲבָה וּלְיִרְאָה אֶת שְׁמֶֽךָ וְלֹא נֵבוֹשׁ וְלֹא נִכָּלֵם וְלֹא נִכָּשֵׁל לְעוֹלָם וָעֶד: כִּי בְשֵׁם קָדְשְׁךָ הַגָּדוֹל וְהַנּוֹרָא בָּטָֽחְנוּ, נָגִֽילָה וְנִשְׂמְחָה בִּישׁוּעָתֶֽךָ.

Enlighten our eyes to Your Torah, Let our hearts adhere to Your Mitzvot, Unify our hearts to love and respect Your name,  So that we will never be ashamed or disgraced, nor ever stumble.  For we have trusted in Your holy, great and awesome name.  Let us be glad and let us rejoice in Your saving power.

V'hayah  lachem l'tzitzit, ur'item oto uz'chartem et kol mitzvat Adonai, va-asitem otam, v'lo taturu acharei l'vavchem v'acharei eineichem, asher atem zonim achareihem. L'ma-an tizk'ru va-asitem et kol mitzvotay, vihyitem k'doshim leiloheichem.

The Eternal spoke to Moses, saying:  “Speak to the Israelite people and tell them that they should make tzitzit (fringes) for themselves on the corners of their garments, attaching to the tzitzit of each corner a blue thread.  Tell them, ‘These tzitzit are fringes to help you remember and do all the commandments of the Eternal so that whenever you look at them you will not pursue the desires of your heart and the temptations of your eyes that have often led you astray.’” (Numbers 15:37-39)

Therefore, remember and do all My commandments and be holy to your God.  I am the Eternal, your God, who led you out of the Land of Egypt to be your God.  I am the Eternal, your God. (Numbers 15:40-41)

FOR MY BLESSINGS /  על ברכותי

 

Dear God, Open my eyes and I shall behold your blessings.

I thank You for the blessing of friends and family, for the people in my life who care for me and for whom I care.  Strengthen the bonds of love that tie us to each other so that we never feel lost or alone.

I thank You for the blessing of memory – the deep memories that connect me to my past; to my old neighborhood, to my parents and grandparents, to old friends, to my days of happiness and of struggles.  Fortify my memory so that I never forget what a special person I am in Your sight.

I thank You for the blessing of hope – hope for myself and dreams for the future.  I thank You for the years I’ve lived and the insights I’ve gained as I have tired to leave this world a little better than it was when I entered it.  Help those who come after me to find the same hope in a better world, which I had, as they build on what I have taught them.

I thank You for the blessing of beauty, for art, music and literature, and for the natural beauty of the great world in which I live.  I thank You for all the beautiful things I have experienced.  Keep my heart open to find something of joy and beauty each day I am alive so that my life will always seem bright and new.

I thank You for the blessing of courage that has helped me in times of trouble.  I am grateful for the inner strength I found to meet the challenges of the past and I pray that I will find the fortitude I will need as I face the future.  Keep my heart strong as I look forward to the challenges and blessings that are still in store for me.

I thank You for all that I have learned over my lifetime – the people I have met, the places I have seen, the experiences I have had.  I am thankful for the wisdom and insights into life that I have acquired.  May I never forget how fortunate I am to have been able to see so deeply and clearly as I continue to grow in wisdom as the years past.

 

I thank you for the blessing of forgiveness – the power to let go of the past and the opportunity to grow in the future. As I forgive others for the harm they may have caused me, let me forgive myself for the mistakes I have made.  Let me see each new day as a new beginning in which I can reflect Your liberating love.

And I thank You for my Jewish heritage which has been my precious possession.  I am grateful for the guidance it gives me, the hope it offers me and the insights it teaches me.  I am blessed to be one more link in the chain of tradition that connects me and my loved ones to the Jewish people over time and space and may I always use the best of my heritage to build a better and more peaceful world for all people.

FOR SUKKOT

 

This is the season of joy.  We give thanks for the gift of the harvest, for our wonderful earth and for the dream of a better world to come.  May the time we spend in the sukkah, the fragile harvest booth, remind us of our dependency on You, Dear God, as well as of the others who depend on us.     
    

Keep us aware of Your presence in our lives as we strive to make the blessings of Your world available to all Your children so that soon we will all be able to celebrate a world of peace and fellowship in Jerusalem, Your holy city.  Amen.

 

FOR SHEMINI ATZERET

    

As we gather at the end of our sacred season, we give thanks for the blessings of our festivals.  We are grateful the time we were able to spend with family and friends as we strengthen the bonds of love that tie us to each other.  We are thankful for the opportunity to review our life’s journey, to give thanks for our blessings and to dream of the future for us, our loved ones and our people.   May we never fail to appreciate the blessings of life, love and faith as our life journey unfolds.  Bless us with serenity and peace, today and everyday. Amen!

 

FOR SIMCHAT TORAH 

    

This is a time of endings and beginnings.  The cycle of the Torah has come to an end and begins once again.  As we look back upon this past year we are amazed at how much we have seen, how much we have learned.  We have truly grown in wisdom and insight. We see our lives, our tradition and our Torah in a new light.  May we be renewed this year for a life of understanding and wisdom as we hear the ancient words of our Torah with renewed strength, courage, hope and vitality.  Amen.

 

FOR HANUKKAH

    

This is the Festival of Light.  Each candle we light reminds us of the gift of light - the light of hope, the light of courage, the light of faith, the light of fellowship, the light of knowledge, the light of wisdom, the light of liberty, and the light of shalom - lasting peace.  Dear God may we be worthy to enjoy the lights of our festival of Hanukkah as we remember the courage of the Maccabees and their hope for a better world for us, their children.  Amen.

 

FOR PESACH

 

This is the season of freedom.  We celebrate with family and friends our people’s liberation from slavery in Egypt and our hope for a time when all will be free.  Freedom is an awesome responsibility.  It is a gift that was purchased at a great price.  As we acknowledge the miracle of liberty, let us not forget the countless individuals who from generation to generation struggled so hard that the promise of the Exodus be fulfilled for us and for people all over the world.  
    

Dear God help us to be worthy of the gift of freedom.  May we always cherish our liberties.  May we strive to overthrow all forms of slavery and oppression as we make the promise of freedom a reality for all in Your world. Amen.

 

FOR SHAVUOT

    

Dear God open our ears and uncover our eyes to Your word today as you did for our ancestors so long ago as they gathered at the foot of Mount Sinai to harken to your call.   
  

Your word to us, the Torah, is a light to our eyes and a blessing to our souls.  May we always find new ways to keep its eternal truths at the center of our lives.  May we listen so that we can do Your will in this world so that our lives will be full of meaning and we will be able to share Your love with all Your creatures today and everyday.  Amen

 

BLESSING FOR PEACE / ברכת שלום


שִׂים שָׁלוֹם טוֹבָה וּבְרָכָה, חֵן וָחֶֽסֶד וְרַחֲמִים, עָלֵֽינוּ וְעַל כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל עַמֶּֽךָ. בָּרְכֵֽנוּ, אָבִֽינוּ, כֻּלָּֽנוּ כְּאֶחָד בְּאוֹר פָּנֶֽיךָ,


Sim shalom tovah uv'rachah, chein vachesed v'rachamim, aleinu v'al kol yisra-eil amecha. Bar'cheinu, avinu, kulanu k'echad b'or panecha,

So God
We really don’t want much,
Just Shalom, 
Which is nothing more than
Peace, goodness and blessings
Love, mercy and compassion

For us, for all Jewish people, and for all the world,
If You don’t mind.

It’s really not all that much.
All You need to do is shine down upon us,

Because with Your light, we’ll find what we need . . .
The Torah of Life, Love and Mercy
And Charity, Blessing, Compassion, Vitality and Peace.

May the One who makes peace in the high heavens, make peace for us, for all Israel and for all who dwell on earth

BLESSING OVER THE LULAV AND ETROG / על נטילת לולב

 

The angels ask, “Where is the place in which God’s glorious presence appears?”  We show them the place by shaking the lulav and etrog to the four points of the compass and, then, above and below.  God’s presence is all around us and we can find it wherever we are.

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ מֶֽלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשָֽׁנוּ בְּמִצְוֹתָיו, וְצִוָּֽנוּ עַל נְטִילַת לוּלָב.

Baruch atah Adonai eloheinu melech ha-olam, asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav, v'tzivanu al n'tilat lulav.

 

 

We bless and praise You our Eternal God, sovereign of all, who has shown us how to live lives of goodness and beauty through Your mitzvot, Your directives, and who has directed us to lift up and wave the lulav.

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ מֶֽלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, שֶׁהֶחֱיָֽנוּ וְקִיְּמָֽנוּ וְהִגִּיעָֽנוּ לַזְּמַן הַזֶּה.

We bless and praise you our Eternal God, sovereign of all, who gave us life, and nurtured us, and brought us to this joyous time.

Open the Gates of Righteousness for me so that I may enter and thank our Eternal God
This is surely the Eternal’s gate, let all who are righteous come in.

Od'cha ki anitani, vat'hi li lishuah

I thank you for answering me.  It was You who saved me.

אֶֽבֶן מָאֲסוּ הַבּוֹנִים, הָיְתָה לְרֹאשׁ פִּנָּה.

Even ma-asu habonim, hay'tah l'rosh pinah.

The stone the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.

מֵאֵת יְיָ הָֽיְתָה זֹּאת, 
הִיא נִפְלָאת בְּעֵינֵֽינוּ.

 

Mei-eit Adonai hay'tah zot, 
hi niflat b'eineinu.

This is from Adonai.  It is a marvel before my eyes.

זֶה הַיּוֹם עָשָׂה יְיָ, 
נָגִֽילָה וְנִשְׂמְחָה בוֹ.

Zeh hayom asah Adonai, 
nagilah v'nism'chah vo.

This is the day Adonai, has made. Let us be glad and rejoice in it.

TORAH SERVICE

וַאֲנִי תְפִלָּתִי לְךָ יְיָ עֵת רָצוֹן, אֱלֹהִים בְּרָב חַסְדֶּֽךָ, עֲנֵֽנִי בֶּאֱמֶת יִשְׁעֶֽךָ.

May I pray to You, Dear God, in a favorable moment,

and may you, Dear God, answer me in love with Your saving truth. (Psalm 69:14)

אֵין כָּמֽוֹךָ בָאֱלֹהִים, יְיָ, וְאֵין כְּמַעֲשֶֽׂיךָ. מַלְכוּתְךָ מַלְכוּת כָּל עֹלָמִים, וּמֶמְשַׁלְתְּךָ בְּכָל דֹּר וָדֹר.

Ein kamocha va-elohim, Adonai, v'ein k'ma-asecha. Malchut'cha malchut kol olamim, umemshalt'cha b'chol dor vador.

 

There is none like You, Dear God, and no works can compare to Your own. (Psalm 86:8)  Your dominion encompasses all worlds and Your sovereignty extends throughout the generations. (Psalm 145:13)

יְיָ מֶֽלֶךְ, יְיָ מָלָךְ, יְיָ יִמְלֹךְ לְעֹלָם וָעֶד. יְיָ עֹז לְעַמּוֹ יִתֵּן, יְיָ יְבָרֵךְ אֶת עַמּוֹ בַשָּׁלוֹם.

Adonai melech, Adonai malach, Adonai yimloch l'olam va-ed. Adonai oz l'amo yitein, Adonai y'vareich et amo vashalom

The Eternal One rules now, then and forever.  The Eternal One blesses God’s people with Shalom, Peace. (Psalm 29:11)

אַב הָרַחֲמִים, הֵיטִֽיבָה בִרְצֽוֹנְךָ אֶת צִיּוֹן, תִּבְנֶה חוֹמוֹת יְרוּשָׁלָֽיִם. כִּי בְךָ לְבַד בָּטָֽחְנוּ, מֶֽלֶךְ אֵל רָם וְנִשָּׂא, אֲדוֹן עוֹלָמִים.

Av harachamim, heitivah virtzon'cha et tziyon, tivneh chomot y'rushalayim. Ki v'cha l'vad batach'nu, melech eil ram v'nisa, adon olamim.


May the Source of Compassion, who showers Zion with goodness, fortify Jerusalem, because we have placed our trust only in You, the high and exalted Sovereign One, Ruler of All Worlds.

וַיְהִי בִּנְסֹֽעַ הָאָרֹן וַיֹּֽאמֶר משֶׁה: קוּמָה יְיָ, וְיָפֻֽצוּ אֹיְבֶֽיךָ, וְיָנֻֽסוּ מְשַׂנְאֶֽיךָ מִפָּנֶֽיךָ:

Vay'hi binsoa ha-aron vayomer mosheh, kumah, Adonai, v'yafutzu oy'vecha, v'yanusu m'sanecha mipanecha.

And it was when the Holy Ark set forth, Moses declared:
“Rise up, Almighty God, and disperse Your enemies;
May all who hate You flee from Your presence.” (Numbers 10:35)

כִּי מִצִּיּוֹן תֵּצֵא תוֹרָה , וּדְבַר יְיָ מִירוּשָלָֽיִם:  בָּרוּךְ שֶׁנָּתַן תּוֹרָה לְעַמּוֹ יִשְׂרָאֵל בִּקְדֻשָּׁתוֹ:

Ki mitziyon teitzei torah, ud'var Adonai mirushalayim. Baruch shenatan torah l'amo yisra-eil bikdushato.

Torah will come forth out of Zion, and the Eternal One’s word from Jerusalem, Your holy city. (Isaiah 2:3)  Blessed is the One who, as a manifestation of His holiness, gave the Torah to His people Israel.

The Torah is a Tapestry

 

The Torah is a tapestry which can adorn the days in which we dwell.

Let us embrace it and make it our own.
Let us weave its text into the texture of our lives.

Its teachings sustain us, its beauty delights us when we open our eyes to its splendor.

It is not a mystery, far beyond reach;
It is not in heaven beyond our grasp.

It is as close to us as we will allow it,
on our lips, in our heart, integral to our deeds.

Let us study its words, fulfill its commands,
and make its instruction our second nature.

It is the tangible gift of God’s love.
Let us weave its text into the texture of our lives.

A PRAYER FOR HEALING

Dear God, life sometimes seems so hard.  Often my body and soul feel burdened by the limitations that challenge me daily.  What once seemed so simple, now often feels so complex.  Please be my source of strength and comfort as I deal with the challenges of my life.  Help me to find some joy and satisfaction in the simple activities of living.  Open my eyes to the good which is mine in Your wondrous world so that I may find sustenance in the miracles of each day. Open my heart to others so that I can be a good friend, a supportive neighbor, a productive citizen and a caring contributor to the life of my family, my community, my people and my world.  May the simple blessings of living enrich my life and sustain my soul today and every day.  Amen.

Sovereign of All accept with mercy our prayers for our country, our government and all our fellow citizens.  Strengthen us in our desire to live according to our values. Guide us in the ways that make for happiness, freedom, tranquility and peace.  Remove from us the spirit of jealousy, enmity, hatred and strife.  May we always be a beacon for liberty and justice throughout the world and an advocate for peace and democracy in the council of nations.  May the Torah’s proclamation of freedom always ring in our hearts – “Proclaim liberty throughout the land and to all the inhabitants thereof.” (Leviticus 25:10)  Amen.

For Love is stronger than Death (Song of Songs 8:6)

Memory brings us together.  It ties our present to our past and gives direction to our future.  It helps us learn from our mistakes and draw strength from our successes.

We gather today to share our memories: memories of those who have been a part of our lives and who have now gone to their eternal home.  They touched our hearts, souls and minds; over the years they shared their lives with us, and we still feel their absence.

We gather today to acknowledge our loss, to share our hurt, and to offer thanksgiving for the opportunities we had to learn from them and grow with them.  They still live on in our lives and in the lives of all whom they touched along the pathways of their years.

At times when our sense of loss and separation seems to overwhelm us, when sorrow and grief seek to engulf us, we reach out to each other and to the Divine spark within us for love, support and meaning.  We seek the light of God that illumines our eyes and brightens our souls.

Dear God, in times of sorrow and grief, as in times of celebration and rejoicing, may we never be far from Your guiding beacon.  Grant us the strength to feel Your presence within and without us as we go about our daily tasks.  May we be graced with the power to see Your glow in the souls of all we meet, and may their memory light our way on our path to You.

A YIZKOR PRAYER

God above, at this sacred hour, we remember with love and reverence those no longer with us.

We recall family members and dear friends whose souls are with You.

We also remember those who, throughout our history, gave their lives for the sanctification of Your name – those who perished so that Judaism might survive.

We remember the innocent victims of ruthless pogroms.  We recall the six million who were slaughtered during the Holocaust.

We also remember the heroes who fought and died to give life to the State of Israel and to guarantee its continued existence.

And we remember the countless good people of all nations and faiths who dedicated their lives to the betterment of humanity and our world, those who struggled to promote freedom, liberty, and a better, safer, healthier life for all.

May their repose be in paradise.  May their memory be a blessing.

יְהַלְלוּ אֶת שֵׁם יְיָ, כִּי נִשְׂגָּב שְׁמוֹ לְבַדּוֹ:


Y'hal'lu et sheim Adonai, ki nisgav sh'mo l'vado. 

Praise the Eternal’s name, for it alone is supreme.

הוֹדוֹ עַל אֶֽרֶץ וְשָׁמָֽיִם. וַיָּֽרֶם קֶֽרֶן לְעַמּוֹ, תְּהִלָּה לְכָל חֲסִידָיו, לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל עַם קְרוֹבוֹ, הַלְלוּיָהּ.


Hodo al eretz v'shamayim. Vayarem keren l'amo, t'hilah l'chol chasidav, livnei yisra-eil am k'rovo, hal'luyah.


God’s majesty abides on the earth and in the heavens.  God has lifted up our people’s strength.  Praise to all God’s loyal ones.  To the children of Israel, a people close to God.  Hallelujah! (Psalm 148:13-14)

It is a tree of life to those who hold fast to it, and its supporters are happy.  Its ways are ways of pleasantness and all its paths are paths of peace.  (Proverbs 3:18,17)  Return us to You, Dear God, and we will return.  Renew our days as of old. (Lamentations 5:21)

ALEINU

Vaanachnu kor'im umishtachavim umodim, lifnei melech malchei ham'lachim, hakadosh

Let us praise the Master of All!  Let us exalt the One who created from the beginning!  For God did not make us like the other nations of the earth, nor did God place us with the other families of the globe.  God did not place our portion with theirs, nor did God set our fate with that of the many.  Therefore, we bend the knee, bow low, and offer thanks to the Sovereign God, Ruler of All, The Holy One who is Blessed.

Shehu noteh shamayim v'yoseid  aretz, umoshav y'karo bashamayim mima-al, ush'chinat uzo b'gav'hei m'romim, hu eloheinu ein od. Emet malkeinu, efes zulato,  kakatuv b'torato: V'yadata hayom vahasheivota el l'vavecha, ki Adonai hu ha-elohim bashamam mima-al, v'al ha-aretz mitachat, ein od.

God stretched forth the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth.  God’s glory dwells in the heavens beyond, while God’s powerful presence rises above the lofty peaks.  This is our God.  There is no other.  Truly, there is nothing that can be compared to our Divine Ruler.  As it appears in God’s holy Torah, “This day, know and accept with your heart and mind that the Eternal is God in the heavens above and on the earth below.  There is no other!” (Deuteronomy 4:39)

 

וְנֶאֱמַר, וְהָיָה יְיָ לְמֶֽלֶךְ עַל כָּל הָאָֽרֶץ, בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא יִהְיֶה יְיָ אֶחָד, וּשְמוֹ אֶחָד:

V'ne-emar, v'hayah  Adonai l'melech al kol ha-aretz, bayom hahu yihyeh Adonai echad, ush'mo  echad.

Dear God, all dominion is Yours and forever You will reign in glory, as it is written in the Torah, “The Eternal is sovereign forever,” (Exodus 15:18) and as Your prophet declared, “Soon You will be known as supreme throughout all the earth, and then You will be one and Your name, one.” (Zechariah 14:9)

There is none like our God.  Who can be compared to our Lord?  So we thank our Sovereign and bless our Redeemer, because You are our God, Lord, Sovereign and Redeemer.  You are the One to whom our ancestors offered sweetly spiced incense.

MOURNER'S KADDISH

We pause for a moment to remember those who were dear to us while they lived and who remain in our lives through the precious gift of love. Their gentle words, kind thoughts, and best wishes for us helped make us the special people we are today. We give thanks to God for the gift of their lives with the words of our prayer of praise, the Kaddish.

The Master of All who reigned 
before all created things were formed.
The moment when all was made by the Divine will
was God sovereignty first proclaimed.

and God shall be forever robed in glory.

God is one, beyond compare 
and there is no other to join with God 
Without beginning, without end
and all power and dominion is God’s alone.

This is my God, my Redeemer who lives,
A rock for my troubles in bitter times.
God is my banner and my refuge,
The portion in my cup on the day I call.

I place my spirit in God’s hand
when I sleep and when I awake

KIDDUSHA RABBA / קידושא רבא

SHABBAT

וְשָׁמְרוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶת הַשַּׁבָּת, לַעֲשׂוֹת אֶת הַשַּׁבָּת לְדֹרֹתָם בְּרִית עוֹלָם. בֵּינִי וּבֵין בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אוֹת הִיא לְעֹלָם, כִּי שֵֽׁשֶׁת יָמִים עָשָׂה יְיָ אֶת הַשָּׁמַֽיִם וְאֶת הָאָֽרֶץ, וּבַיוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי שָׁבַת וַיִנָּפַשׁ.

 

V'sham'ru v'nei yisra-eil et hashabat, la-asot et hashabat l'dorotam b'rit olam. Beini uvein b'nei yisra-eil ot hi l'olam, ki sheishet yamim asah Adonai et hashamayim v'et ha-aretz, uvayom hashvi-i shavat vayinafash.

 

The Children of Israel will preserve the Shabbat in order to observe that holy day as an everlasting covenant over all their generations.  The Shabbat is an eternal sign between Me and the Children of Israel, because in the course of six days the Eternal God made the heaven and the earth and on the seventh day God rested and was refreshed.  (Exodus 31:16-17)

עַל כֵּן בֵּרַךְ יְיָ אֶת יוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת וַיְקַדְּשֵֽׁהוּ.

Al kein beirach Adonai et yom hashabat vay'kad'sheihu.


Therefore, the Eternal God blessed the Shabbat 
and declared it to be holy. (Exodus 20:11)

וַיְדַבֵּר מֹשֶׁה אֶת־מֹעֲדֵי יְהוָֹה אֶל־בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל:

Vay'dabeir mosheh et moadei Adonai, el b'nei yisra-eil.

So Moses declared to the Israelites the Eternal’s designated seasons.

God alone does great wonders because God’s abiding love is boundless.

HELPFUL WORDS

Aliyah: The literal meaning of aliyah is “going up.”  As it is used in the context of the Torah service, an aliyah is an opportunity to “go up” from the congregation to read from the Torah scroll or to bless the Torah before and after the reading.

Aron Kodesh (Holy Ark): The Aron Kodesh is the cabinet on the bema that holds the Torah scrolls.

Bema: The bema is the special platform in the front of the sanctuary.

D’var Torah: A short explanation of the weekly Torah reading.

Haftara: The Haftara is a selection from the writings of the biblical Prophets that corresponds in theme or imagery to the weekly reading in the Torah. The individual who is given the honor of reading the Haftara is called the maftir, the one who concludes the reading of scripture, and is often called up to the bema for the last reading from the Torah scroll.

 

HaMotzei: The blessing over the bread or grace before a meal.

Kiddush: The blessing over the wine.

Kippah: The small cap Jews often wear in synagogue as a sign of respect to God.

Lulav and Etrog:  The lulav and etrog (esrog)  refer to the four different kinds of plants from Israel that the Torah directs Jews to carry on Sukkot.  They are: (1) the etrog or the citron, a citrus fruit that looks like a lemon, (2) the lulav or the palm frond, (3) the hadas or myrtle, and (4) the aravah or the willow.  As part of the celebration of Sukkot the lulav and etrog are shaken in six directions – the four cardinal points of the compass and up and down – to signify that we can feel God’s presence wherever we may go.

Neir Tamid (Eternal Light): The Neir Tamid is a perpetual light that hangs over the Aron Kodesh to remind us of God’s presence in our sanctuary and in our lives.

Pesach:  The Festival of Passover.  Pesach is one of the three pilgrimage festivals (Shalosh Regalim) during which, in Biblical Times, the Jews made pilgrimages to the Temple in Jerusalem.  Pesach celebrates the Exodus, the departure of the Jews from slavery in Egypt over three thousand years ago.  Pesach is also a spring holiday and it celebrates the beginning of the wheat and barley harvest in the Land of Israel.

Shavuot: The Feast of Weeks.  Shavuot (Shavous) is one of the three pilgrimage festivals (Shalosh Regalim) during which, in Biblical Times, the Jews made pilgrimages to the Temple in Jerusalem.  Shavuot takes place seven weeks after Pesach, Passover, and commemorates Matan Torah, the revelation of the Torah on Mount Sinai.  Shavuot is also an agricultural festival and marks the end of the wheat and barley harvest.  Another name for Shavuot is Pentecost, the Fifty Day Festival.

Shemini Atzeret: The Eighth Day of Assembly.  Shemini Atzeret (Shemini Atzeres) marks the end of the Fall Holiday cycle.  In ancient times it was the final celebration in the Temple in Jerusalem before all those who made the pilgrimage would depart for home.  

Simchat Torah:  The Day of Rejoicing in the Torah.  Simchat Torah (Simchas Torah)  is the second day of the festival of Shemini Atzeret, the Eighth Day of Assembly.  On Simchat Torah we finish the annual cycle of reading the Torah with by reading the closing verses of the Book of Deuteronomy and we begin a new cycle by reading the opening verses of the Book of Genesis.  Simchat Torah is a very happy holiday and we celebrate it with song and dance in the synagogue.

Sukkot:  The Festival of Booths.  Sukkot (Sukkos)  is one of the three pilgrimage festivals (Shalosh Regalim) during which, in Biblical times, the Jews made pilgrimages to the Temple in Jerusalem. Sukkot commemorates the forty-years of wandering in the wilderness after the Exodus from Egypt and Moses’ building of the mishkan, the portable tent-like shrine. Sukkot is also a harvest festival and marks the end of the fruit and vegetable harvest in the land of Israel.

Synagogue:  The synagogue is the central institution of Jewish life.  It is called in Hebrew a beit knesset, “a place of assembly,” a beit tefilah, “a place of prayer,” and a beit midrash, “a place of study.”  The word “synagogue” comes from ancient Greek and means “the place of assembly” and is based on the Hebrew Beit Knesset.  The Yiddish word for synagogue, shul, refers to the synagogue as the “place of study.”

Tallit: The Tallit (tallis) is the prayer shawl that Jews wear during the morning services.  For the afternoon and evening services, it is customary only for those leading the service to wear a tallit.  The fringes on the corners of the tallit remind us of the mitzvot of the Torah.

Torah:  The word Torah has many meanings.  In its broadest sense Torah refers to the full scope of Jewish religious and spiritual life. In a more specific sense, it refers to the first five books of the Bible, the Five Books of Moses, also called the Chumash, which form the foundation of Jewish life.  The Torah Scroll is the most sacred object in Judaism.  It is written by hand on parchment and is kept in the Aron Kodesh, the Holy Ark.
