Yom Kippur Service

Opening Meditation

A Psalm of David:  

The earth and all that fills it belong to the Eternal, the world and all those who dwell within it are God’s,
Since God founded it upon the primordial seas, 
and established it upon the unseen torrents.
Who shall ascend up into the Eternal One’s mountain?  
Who shall stand in God’s holy place?
One who has clean hands and a pure heart;
One who has not taken God’s name in vain, nor sworn deceitfully.
This one shall receive the Eternal’s blessing 
and righteousness for the God who delivers all.
Let this be the generation of those who seek God, 
who, like Jacob of old, seek Your presence, Selah! (Psalm 24:1-6)

Today You open the gates to Your heavenly sanctuary to all.  Today, pilgrims, all carrying the burdens of their past, approach Your portals.  Today, we, too, have picked up our packs and have joined the procession.

What heavy loads we carry!  Our packs are weighted down with our regrets and disappointments.  We have filled them with anger and contempt.  They hold all our mistakes and misdeeds.  We have tied them with bands of hatred and fastened them tight with greed and desire.

Who can climb up Your holy mountain so burdened?  Who can make the ascent bearing such a heavy load?  Now is the time to empty our packs, casting away the baggage of our past, so that we can enter into Your sacred house unburdened.

How could we have collected so much over the past year?  Where did we hide our blessings?  Where did we place the gifts of love we so earnestly sought?  Where did the smiles, laughter, sweetness, and joy go?  Into which small pocket did we stuff our most precious gifts?  We know we put it all somewhere, but where?

Today let our spirits fly through Your blessed courts.  Let our souls rejoice and our hearts rejoice in the blessings we have given and received.  Purify our contrite spirits and release us from the burdens of our past, so that we might refill our sacks with Your abiding gifts of love, grace, and compassion.  

And as we leave Your Sanctuary this evening, guide our paths by Your Torah and enlighten our way with Your mitzvot.  Ensure that we depart with wisdom and understanding, so that we may discover the goodness, happiness, joy, and blessings within and around us.  Bless us with a year of life, love, and light, so that next year we may return to You with sacks filled only with laughter, song, and thanksgiving.  Amen. הַמֶּֽלֶךְ
Hamelech

 הַיּוֹשֵׁב עַל כִּסֵּא רָם וְנִשָּׂא:

 

hayosheiv al kisei ram v'nisa.

To the Sovereign God who sits upon a high and exalted throne!

שׁוֹכֵן עַד, מָרוֹם וְקָדוֹש שְׁמוֹ: וְכָתוּב, 
רַנְּנוּ צַדִּיקִים בַּיְיָ, לַיְשָׁרִים נָאוָה תְהִלָּה.

 

Shochein ad, marom v'kadosh sh'mo.

V'chatuv, ran'nu tzadikim b'Adonai, laysharim navah t'hilah.

 

You who abide forever, Exalted and Holy is Your name.  It is Your psalmist who declared:  “Let the righteous sing before the Eternal One.  Let the upright offer praise.” (Psalm 33:1)

בְּפִי יְשָׁרִים תִּתְרוֹמָם.
וּבְדִבְרֵי צַדִּיקִים תִּתְבָּרַךְ.
וּבִלְשׁוֹן חֲסִידִים תִּתְקַדָּשׁ.
וּבְקֶֽרֶב קְדוֹשִׁים תִּתְהַלָּל.

 

B'fi y'sharim titromam,

uv'divrei tzadikim titbarach,
uvilshon chasidim titkadash,
uv'kerev k'doshim tithalal

You are exalted by the mouth of the upright. 
You are blessed with the words of the righteous. 
You are sanctified by the tongue of the pious. 
You are praised in the heart of the holy.

Baruch Adonai ham'vorach l'olam va-ed.

 

Bless the Blessed Eternal God!
The Blessed Eternal God is blessed both now and forever!


בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ מֶֽלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם,

יוֹצֵר אוֹר, וּבוֹרֵא חֹֽשֶךְ, עֹשֶׂה שָׁלוֹם וּבוֹרֵא אֶת הַכֹּל:

 

Baruch atah Adonai, eloheinu melech ha-olam,

yotzeir or uvorei choshech, oseh shalom uvorei et hakol.

 

We bless and praise You, our Eternal God, ruler of time and space,

because You form light and create darkness; You establish peace and create all things. (Isaiah 45:7)  

אוֹר עוֹלָם בְּאֹצַר חַיִּים, 
אוֹרוֹת מֵאֹֽפֶל אָמַר וַיֶּֽהִי.

 

Or olam b'otzar chayim, 
orot meiofel amar vayehi.

Everlasting light flows from God’s treasury of life;
God summoned light from darkness, and it was so.

 

Shema

שְׁמַ֖ע יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל יְהוָֹ֥ה אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ יְהוָֹ֥ה אֶחָֽד:

 

Sh'ma Yisra-eil, Adonai Eloheinu Adonai Echad.   


בָּרוּךְ שֵׁם כְּבוֹד מַלְכוּתוֹ לְעוֹלָם וָעֶד:


Baruch sheim k'vod malchuto l'olam va-ed. 

Listen well, people of Israel, the Eternal is our God, 
the Eternal One Alone!


Blessed be the glorious name of God’s Dominion now and forever!

V'ahavta eit Adonai elohecha, b'chol l'vav'cha, uv'chol nafsh'cha, uv'chol m'odecha.  V'hayu had'varim ha-eileh, asher anochi m'tzav'cha Hayom, al l'vavecha. V'shinantam l'vanecha, v'dibarta bam, b'shivt'cha b'veitecha, uv'lecht'cha vaderech, uv'shochb'cha, uv'kumecha. Uk'shartam l'ot al yadecha, v'hayu l'totafot bein einecha.  Uch'tavtam al m'zuzot beitecha uvisharecha.

You will love the Eternal, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might, so that these words, which I command you today, shall be in your heart.  You shall teach them to your children.  You shall speak of them when you are at home, when you are on your way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.  You shall bind them as a sign on your arm, and they shall be a sign upon your brow.  You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.  (Deuteronomy 6:4-9)

לְמַ֣עַן תִּזְכְּר֔וּ וַֽעֲשִׂיתֶ֖ם אֶת־כָּל־מִצְוֹתָ֑י וִֽהְיִיתֶ֥ם קְדֹשִׁ֖ים לֵאלֹֽהֵיכֶֽם: אֲנִ֞י יְהוָֹ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֗ם אֲשֶׁ֨ר הוֹצֵ֤אתִי אֶתְכֶם֙ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם לִהְי֥וֹת לָכֶ֖ם לֵֽאלֹהִ֑ים אֲנִ֖י יְהוָֹ֥ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶֽם: יְהוָֹ֥ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶֽם אֶמֶת . . .

 

L'ma-an tizk'ru va-asitem et kol mitzvotay, vihyitem k'doshim leiloheichem.  Ani Adonai eloheichem, asher hotzeiti etchem mei-eretz mitzrayim, lihyot lachem leilohim, ani Adonai eloheichem. Adonai eloheichem emet . . .

 

Therefore, remember and do all My commandments and be holy to your God.  I am the Eternal, your God, who led you out of the Land of Egypt to be your God.  I am the Eternal, your God. (Numbers 15:40-41)

 

Today of all days is the most joyful and awesome.
Joyful – we are cleansed of our sins.

Awesome – we are entering into a unknown land.

Joyful – we are not slaves to our history.
Awesome – we are still products of our past.

Joy and awe, happiness and fear,
Endings and beginnings, 
Celebration and trepidation,
But there is no place to go but ahead.

The return of the waters closed the road back to Egypt.
Our ancestors watched Pharaoh’s banners float away with the waves.
Cleansed of the past, but still to discover
What makes liberated slaves free human beings,
Our people celebrated the opportunities before them,
And with voices united, they boldly declared: (Rabbi Lewis John Eron)

מִי כָמֹֽכָה בָּאֵלִם יְיָ,
מִי כָּמֹֽכָה נֶאְדָּר בַּקֹּֽדֶשׁ
 נוֹרָא תְהִלֹּת עֹֽשֵׂה פֶֽלֶא:

 

Mi chamochah ba-eilim Adonai,
Mi kamochah nedar bakodesh,
Nora t'hilot, Oseih fele.

Who is like You, Eternal One, among the divinities?
Who is like You, glorious in holiness,
Awesome, praiseworthy, the One who brings forth wonders? (Exodus 15:11)

שִׁירָה חֲדָשָׁה שִׁבְּחוּ גְאוּלִים לְשִׁמְךָ עַל שְׂפַת הַיָּם, יַֽחַד כֻּלָּם הוֹדוּ וְהִמְלִֽיכוּ וְאָמְרוּ:

Shirah chadashah shib'chu g'ulim l'shimcha al s'fat hayam, Yachad kulam hodu v'himlichu v'am'ru:


Singing a new song, our newly freed ancestors declared Your sovereignty:

יְיָ יִמְלֹךְ לְעוֹלָם וָעֶד:

 

Adonai yimloch l'olam va-ed.

 

The Eternal shall rule forever and ever! (Exodus 15:18)

צוּר יִשְׂרָאֵל, קֽוּמָה בְּעֶזְרַת יִשְׂרָאֵל, וּפְדֵה כִּנְאֻמֶֽךָ יְהוּדָה וְיִשְׂרָאֵל. גֹּאֲלֵֽנוּ יְיָ צְבָאוֹת שְׁמוֹ, קְדוֹשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל. בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ גָּאַל יִשְׂרָאֵל:

Tzur yisra-eil, kumah b'ezrat yisra-eil, uf'deih chinumecha y'hudah v'yisra-eil.  Goaleinu Adonai tz'va-ot sh'mo, k'dosh yisra-eil.  Baruch atah Adonai ga-al yisra-eil.

Rock of Israel, rise up to help the people Israel and deliver Judah and all the other tribes of Israel as You have promised.  You are our Redeemer. You whose name is Adonai Tzvaot, Master of the Heavenly Hosts, You are the Holy One of Israel.  We bless and honor You, our Eternal Source of Freedom, redeemer of Israel!
 

HaTifilah

אֲדֹנָי שְׂפָתַי תִּפְתָּח וּפִי יַגִּיד תְּהִלָּתֶךָ:

Adonay s'fatai tiftach, ufi yagid t'hilatecha.

O Dear God, open now my lips, 
so that my mouth may declare Your praises! (Psalm 51:17)

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ וֵאלֹהֵי אֲבוֹתֵֽינוּ וְאִמּוֹתֵינוּ, אֱלֹהֵי אַבְרָהָם, אֱלֹהֵי יִצְחָק, וֵאלֹהֵי יַעֲקֹב, אֱלֹהֵי שָׂרָה, אֱלֹהֵי רִבְקָה, אֱלֹהֵי לֵאָה, וֵאלֹהֵי רָחֵל. הָאֵל הַגָּדוֹל הַגִּבּוֹר וְהַנּוֹרָא, אֵל עֶלְיוֹן, גּוֹמֵל חֲסָדִים טוֹבִים, וְקוֹנֵה הַכֹּל, וְזוֹכֵר חַסְדֵי אָבוֹת וְאִמַהוֹת, וּמֵבִיא גְאֻלָּה לִבְנֵי בְנֵיהֶם  לְמַעַן שְׁמוֹ בְּאַהֲבָה:

Baruch atah Adonai Eloheinu veilohei avoteinu vimoteinu elohei Avraham, elohei Yitzchak, veilohei Ya-akov, elohei Sarah, elohei Rivka, elohei Leia, veilohei Racheil. Ha-eil hagadol hagibor v'hanora, eil elyon, gomeil chasadim tovim, v'koneih hakol, v'zocheir chasdei avot v’imahot, umeivi g’ula livnei v'neihem, l'ma-an sh'mo b'ahavah.

We bless and praise You, Eternal One, our God and God of our ancestors; God of Abraham, God of Isaac, and God of Jacob, God of Sarah, God of Rebecca, God of Rachel and God of Leah.  You are the great, mighty and awesome God. You are God most high.  You are the source of all good deeds of loving-kindness, the one who establishes all.  You recall the devotion of our ancestors, and with love You will bring redemption to their children’s children, for the sake of Your name. 

מִסּוֹד חֲכָמִים וּנְבוֹנִים, וּמִלֶּֽמֶד דַּֽעַת מְבִינִים, אֶפְתְּחָה פִי בִּתְפִלָה וּבְתַחֲנוּנִים, לְחַלּוֹת וּלְחַנֵּן פְּנֵי מֶֽלֶךְ מָלֵא רַחֲמִים מוֹחֵל וְסוֹלֵֽחַ לַעֲוֹנִים.

Misod chachamim un'vonim, umilemed 
da-at m'vinim, eft'chah fi bitfilah uv'tachanunim, l'chalot ul'chanein p'nei melech malchei rachamim mocheil v'solei-ach la-avonim.


Fortified with the insights of the wise and discerning and with the erudition of scholars, I open my mouth in prayer and supplication to entreat and welcome the Sovereign Source of Abounding Compassion, who pardons and forgives iniquity. 

זָכְרֵֽנוּ לְחַיִּים, מֶֽלֶךְ חָפֵץ בַּחַיִּים, וְכָתְבֵֽנוּ בְּסֵֽפֶר הַחַיִּים, לְמַעַנְךָ אֱלֹהִים חַיִּים.

Zoch'reinu l'chayim, melech chafeitz bachayim, v'chot'veinu  b'seifer hachayim, l'ma-ancha elohim chayim.

מֶֽלֶךְ עוֹזֵר וּמוֹשִֽׁיעַ וּמָגֵן: בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, מָגֵן אַבְרָהָם  וְעֶזְרַת שָׂרָה:

 

Melech ozeir umoshi-a umagein. Baruch atah Adonai, magein Avraham ve-ezrat Sarah.

 

Remember us to life, Sovereign God who delights in life, and inscribe us in the Book of Life, for Your sake, O God of Life!  You are the Sovereign One who aids, saves and protects.  We bless and praise You, Eternal One, Abraham’s shield and Sarah’s help.

אַתָּה גִּבּוֹר לְעוֹלָם אֲדֹנָי, מְחַיֵּה הַכֹּל אַֽתָּה, רַב לְהוֹשִֽׁיעַ: מְכַלְכֵּל חַיִּים בְּחֶֽסֶד, מְחַיֵּה הַכֹּל בְּרַחֲמִים רַבִּים, סוֹמֵךְ נוֹפְלִים, וְרוֹפֵא חוֹלִים, וּמַתִּיר אֲסוּרִים, וּמְקַיֵּם אֱמוּנָתוֹ לִישֵׁנֵי עָפָר, מִי כָמֽוֹךָ בַּֽעַל גְּבוּרוֹת וּמִי דֽוֹמֶה לָּךְ, מֶֽלֶךְ מֵמִית וּמְחַיֶּה וּמַצְמִֽיחַ יְשׁוּעָה: מִי כָמוֹךָ אַב הָרַחֲמִים, זוֹכֵר יְצוּרָיו לְחַיִּים בְּרַחֲמִים: וְנֶאֱמָן אַתָּה לְהַחֲיוֹת הַכֹּל. בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, מְחַיֵּה הַכֹּל:


Atah gibor l'olam adonay, m'chayeih hakol atah, rav l'hoshi-a.  M'chalkeil chayim b'chesed, m'chayeih hakol b'rachamim rabim, someich nof'lim, v'rofei cholim, umatir asurim, um'kayeim emunato  lisheinei afar, mi chamocha ba-al g'vurot umi domeh lach, melech meimit um'chayeh umatzmi-ach y'shuah. Mi chamocha av harachamim, zocheir y'tzurav l'chayim b'rachamim. V'ne-eman atah l'hachayot hakol. Baruch atah Adonai, m'chayeih hakol.


You are mighty forever, Dear God.  You renew all life.  You are great in deliverance.  You sustain all life with loving-kindness. You renew all life with great compassion, lifting up those who fall, healing the ill, freeing the captives, and keeping faith with those asleep in the dust.  Who is like You, Master of Power?  Who is similar to You, Sovereign Source of Life and Death, and who makes way for redemption?  Who is like You, Fountain of Compassion, who with mercy recalls all creatures to life?  You are the faithful source of all life.  We bless and praise You, Eternal One, who brings life to all.

Kedushah

נַעֲרִיצְךָ וְנַקְדִּישְׁךָ כְּסוֹד שִֽׂיחַ שַׂרְפֵי קֹֽדֶשׁ הַמַּקְדִּישִׁים שִׁמְךָ בַּקֹּֽדֶשׁ,

כַּכָּתוּב עַל יַד נְבִיאֶֽךָ: וְקָרָא זֶה אֶל זָה וְאָמַר:

 

Na-aritz'cha v'nakdish'cha, k'sod si-ach sarfei kodesh hamakdishim shimcha bakodesh,

kakatuv al yad n'vi-echa, v'kara zeh el zeh v'amar:


We will adore and sanctify You, according to the mystic meditation of the holy seraphim, who in sanctity sanctify Your name, as Your prophet has written, “Each angel calls out to the other and says, 

קָדוֹשׁ, קָדוֹשׁ, קָדוֹשׁ יְיָ צְבָאוֹת,
 מְלֹא כָל־הָאָֽרֶץ כְּבוֹדוֹ.

 

Kadosh, kadosh, kadosh, adonai tz'va-ot, m'lo chol ha-aretz k'vodo.


‘Holy, holy, holy is the Eternal Ruler of Heaven’s Hosts; 
the whole world is full of God’s glory.’”  (Isaiah 6:3)

כְּבוֹדוֹ מָלֵא עוֹלָם, מְשָׁרְתָיו שׁוֹאֲלִים זֶה לָזֶה אַיֵּה מְקוֹם כְּבוֹדוֹ, לְעֻמָּתָם בָּרוּךְ יֹאמֵֽרוּ:

 

K'vodo malei olam, m'shar'tav shoalim zeh lazeh, ayeih m'kom k'vodo, l'umatam baruch yomeiru:

 

God’s glorious presence fills the world, yet the ministering angels ask each other, “In what place can God’s glory best be found?”  Then, in a burst of blessed awareness, they respond to each other,

בָּרוּךְ כְּבוֹד יְיָ מִמְּקוֹמוֹ.

 

Baruch k'vod adonai mim'komo.

“Blessed is the Eternal’s glorious presence, which flows from every place of encounter with God!”  (Ezekiel 3:12)

מִמְּקוֹמוֹ הוּא יִפֶן בְּרַחֲמִים,

וְיָחֹן עַם הַמְיַחֲדִים שְׁמוֹ עֶֽרֶב וָבֹֽקֶר,

בְּכָל יוֹם תָּמִיד, פַּעֲמַֽיִם בְּאַהֲבָה שְׁמַע אוֹמְרִים:

Mim'komo hu yifen b'rachamim,

v'yachon am hamyachadim sh'mo erev vavoker 
b'chol yom tamid, pa-amayim b'ahavah sh'ma om'rim:

From that place of sacred meeting, God will compassionately turn and shower mercy upon the people who, twice every day, at dusk and at dawn, declare the unity of the holy name as they say with love, “Shema – Listen!”

שְׁמַ֖ע יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל יְהוָֹ֥ה אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ יְהוָֹ֥ה אֶחָֽד:

 

Sh'ma Yisra-eil, Adonai Eloheinu Adonai Echad.

 

Listen well, people of Israel, the Eternal is our God, the Eternal One Alone! (Deuteronomy 6:4)

הוּא אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ, הוּא אָבִֽינוּ, הוּא מַלְכֵּֽנוּ, הוּא מוֹשִׁיעֵֽנוּ,

וְהוּא יַשְׁמִיעֵֽנוּ בְּרַחֲמָיו שֵׁנִית לְעֵינֵי כָּל חָי: לִהְיוֹת לָכֶם לֵאלֹהִים -

Hu eloheinu, hu avinu, hu malkeinu, hu moshi-einu,

v'hu yashmi-einu b'rachamav sheinit l'einei kol chay, lihyot lachem leilohim,

This is our God!  This is our Source!  This is our Sovereign!  This is our Redeemer!  This is the One who will again in mercy reaffirm the bond between us by proclaiming before all the living, 

אֲנִי יְיָ אֱלֹהֵיכֶם.

Ani Adonai eloheichem.

“I, the Eternal One, am your God!” (Numbers 15:41)

אַדִּיר אַדִּירֵֽנוּ, יְיָ אֲדֹנֵינוּ, מָה אַדִּיר שִׁמְךָ בְּכָל הָאָֽרֶץ.

וְהָיָה יְיָ מֶֽלֶךְ עַל כָּל הָאָֽרֶץ, בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא יִהְיֶה יְיָ אֶחָד וּשְׁמוֹ אֶחָד.
וּבְדִבְרֵי קָדְשְׁךָ כָּתוּב לֵאמֹר:

Adir adireinu, Adonai adoneinu, mah adir shimcha b'chal ha-aretz.

V'hayah Adonai l'melech al kol ha-aretz, bayom hahu yihyeh Adonai echad ush'mo echad.
Uv'divrei kodsh'cha katuv leimor:

How exceedingly great You appear to us, Eternal One, and how great is Your name throughout all the earth!  “Soon the time will come when the Eternal One will reign over all earth.  

On that day shall the Eternal be one and God’s holy name be one.”  (Zechariah 14:9)

And thus the Psalmist proclaimed:

יִמְלֹךְ יְיָ לְעוֹלָם, אֱלֹהַֽיִךְ צִיּוֹן לְדֹר וָדֹר: הַלְלוּיָהּ.

 

Yimloch Adonai l'olam, elohayich tziyon, l'dor vador, hal'luyah.

“The Eternal will reign forever, 
your God, O Zion, for all generations.  
Hallelujah!” (Psalm 146:10)

A Prayer for Healing

May the One who was the source of blessings for our ancestors – Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel and Leah – be a reservoir of comfort and support for our loved ones and friends who are ill and in need of courage, hope, and strength.

Yizkor

Memory brings us together.  It ties our present to our past and gives direction to our future.  It helps us learn from our mistakes and draw strength from our successes.

We gather today to share our memories: memories of those who have been a part of our lives and who have now gone to their eternal home.  They touched our hearts, souls and minds; over the years they shared their lives with us, and we still feel their absence.

We gather today to acknowledge our loss, to share our hurt, and to offer thanksgiving for the opportunities we had to learn from them and grow with them.  They still live on in our lives and in the lives of all whom they touched along the pathways of their years.

At times when our sense of loss and separation seems to overwhelm us, when sorrow and grief seek to engulf us, we reach out to each other and to the Divine spark within us for love, support and meaning.  We seek the light of God that illumines our eyes and brightens our souls.

Dear God, in times of sorrow and grief, as in times of celebration and rejoicing, may we never be far from Your guiding beacon.  Grant us the strength to feel Your presence within and without us as we go about our daily tasks.  May we be graced with the power to see Your glow in the souls of all we meet, and may their memory light our way on our path to You.  (Rabbi Lewis John Eron)


A Yizkor Prayer

God above, at this sacred hour, we remember with love and reverence those no longer with us.

We recall family members and dear friends whose souls are with You.

We also remember those who, throughout our history, gave their lives for the sanctification of Your name – those who perished so that Judaism might survive.

We remember the innocent victims of ruthless pogroms.  We recall the six million who were slaughtered during the Holocaust.

We also remember the heroes who fought and died to give life to the State of Israel and to guarantee its continued existence.

And we remember the countless good people of all nations and faiths who dedicated their lives to the betterment of humanity and our world, those who struggled to promote freedom, liberty, and a better, safer, healthier life for all.

May their repose be in paradise.  May their memory be a blessing.

Praise the Eternal’s name, for it alone is supreme.

Hodo al eretz v'shamayim. Vayarem keren l'amo, t'hilah l'chol chasidav,

God’s majesty abides on the earth and in the heavens.  God has lifted up our people’s strength.  Praise to all God’s loyal ones.  To the children of Israel, a people close to God.  Hallelujah!  (Psalm 148:13-14)

Un’taneh Tokef

וּנְתַנֶּה תֹּֽקֶף קְדֻשַּׁת הַיּוֹם, כִּי הוּא נוֹרָא וְאָיוֹם: וּבוֹ תִנָּשֵׂא מַלְכוּתֶֽךָ, וְיִכּוֹן בְּחֶֽסֶד כִּסְאֶֽךָ, וְתֵשֵׁב עָלָיו בֶּאֱמֶת.

 

Un'taneh tokef k'dushat hayom, ki hu nora v'ayom: uvo tinasei malchutecha, v'yikon b'chesed kisecha, v'teisheiv alav be-emet.

Let us proclaim the great sanctity of this day, for it is a truly awesome and fearful day.  On this day we appreciate the greatness of Your dominion, Dear God.  We envision You established on Your throne of mercy, sitting upon it in truth.

It is true that You are the judge and the witness.  You know all that happens and witness all events. You inscribe and seal our fate.  You count and number our days.  You remember that which we have forgotten.  You open the Book of Records and the words speak for themselves, because everyone has signed it with their deeds.

וּבְשׁוֹפָר גָּדוֹל יִתָּקַע, וְקוֹל דְּמָמָה דַּקָּה יִשָּׁמַע: וּמַלְאָכִים יֵחָפֵזוּן, וְחִיל וּרְעָדָה יֹאחֵזוּן, וְיֹאמְרוּ הִנֵּה יוֹם הַדִּין, לִפְקוֹד עַל צְבָא מָרוֹם בַּדִּין, כִּי לֹא יִזְכּוּ בְעֵינֶיךָ בַּדִּין.

Uv'shofar gadol yitaka, v'kol d'mamah dakah yishama: umalachim yeichafeizun, v'chil ur'adah yocheizun, v'yomru hineih yom hadin, lifkod al tz'va marom badin, ki lo yizku v'einecha badin.

The great Shofar is sounded and a quiet echo resounds.  Even the angels are dismayed and are seized by fear and trembling, as they cry out: “Yom HaDin, the Day of Judgement, has arrived!”  They know that when judgement comes, even they will not be seen by You as without fault.

וְכָל בָּאֵי עוֹלָם יַעַבְרוּן לְפָנֶיךָ כִּבְנֵי מָרוֹן. כְּבַקָּרַת רוֹעֶה עֶדְרוֹ, מַעֲבִיר צֹאנוֹ תַּֽחַת שִׁבְטוֹ, כֵּן תַּעֲבִיר וְתִסְפּוֹר וְתִמְנֶה, וְתִפְקוֹד נֶפֶשׁ כָּל חַי, וְתַחְתּוֹךְ קִצְבָה לְכָל בְּרִיָּה, וְתִכְתּוֹב אֶת גְּזַר דִּינָם.

 

V'chol ba-ei olam ya-avrun l'fanecha kivnei maron. K'vakarat roeh edro, ma-avir tzono tachat shivto, kein ta-avir v'tispor v'timneh, v'tifkod nefesh kol chai, v'tachtoch kitzvah l'chol b'riyah, v'tichtov et g'zar dinam.

On this day all who have come into this world pass before You like a flock of sheep.  As a shepherd gathers his sheep, causing them to pass beneath his staff, so do You count, number and record the souls of all the living, measuring the years and setting down the destiny of every creature.

B'rosh hashanah yikateivun, uv'yom tzom kipur yeichateimun, kamah ya-avrun, v'chamah yibareiun: mi yichyeh, umi yamut: mi v'kitzo, umi lo v'kitzo: mi vaeish, umi vamayim: mi vacherev, umi vachayah: mi vara-av, umi vatzama: mi vara-ash, umi vamageifah: mi vachanikah, umi viskilah: mi ya-nu-ach, umi yanu-a: mi yishakeit, umi yitareif: mi yishaleiv, umi yityasar: mi yei-ani, umi yei-asheir: mi yishafeil, umi yarum.

On Rosh HaShanah, it is written, and on Yom Kippur, it is sealed:  Who shall pass from this world and who shall enter it; who shall live and who shall die; who shall reach the fullness of years and who shall be cut off in mid-course; who shall be consumed by fire and who shall drown in deep waters; who shall fall by the sword and who shall be torn apart by beasts; who shall starve and who shall die of thirst; who shall perish in an earthquake and who shall die in a plague; who shall be strangled and who shall be stoned; who shall find rest and who shall wander; who shall be at ease and who shall be disturbed; who shall be tranquil and who shall be afflicted; who shall be poor and who shall be rich; who shall be brought low and who shall be exalted. 

וּתְשׁוּבָה וּתְפִלָּה וּצְדָקָה מַעֲבִירִין אֶת רֹֽעַ הַגְּזֵרָה.

Ut'shuvah ut'filah utz'dakah  ma-avirin et roa hag'zeirah.

But Repentance, Prayer and Righteousness can temper the severity of the decree.

Your fame is matched by our praise of You.  You are hard to anger and ready to forgive. You have no desire for the death of sinners.  You would rather have them turn from the path of wickedness and live.  Until our dying day, You wait for us to repent and will instantly welcome us back.  In truth, You created us and You know what challenges we face because we are merely flesh and blood.

We begin as dust and we end as dust.  We earn our bread at the risk of our lives.  We are like a fragile pot, like the grass that withers, like a flower that fades, like a passing shadow, like a cloud that vanishes, like a burst of wind and like floating dust.  We are no more than a dream that flies away.

וְאַתָּה הוּא מֶֽלֶךְ אֵל חַי וְקַיָּם!

V'atah hu melech eil chai v'kayam!

 

But You are our ruler, the living and everlasting God!

Aleinu

עָלֵֽינוּ לְשַׁבֵּֽחַ לַאֲדוֹן הַכֹּל, לָתֵת גְּדֻלָּה לְיוֹצֵר בְּרֵאשִׁית, שֶׁלֹּא עָשָֽׂנוּ כְּגוֹיֵי הָאֲרָצוֹת, וְלֹא שָׂמָֽנוּ כְּמִשְׁפְּחוֹת  הָאֲדָמָה, שֶׁלֹא שָׂם חֶלְקֵֽנוּ כָּהֶם, וְגֹרָלֵֽנוּ כְּכָל הֲמוֹנָם.


Aleinu l'shabei-ach la-adon hakol, lateit g'dulah l'yotzeir b'reishit, shelo asanu k'goyei ha-aratzot, v'lo samanu k'mishp'chot ha-adamah, shelosam chelkeinu kahem, v'goraleinu k'chol hamonam.

Let us praise the Master of All!  Let us exalt the One who created from the beginning!  For God did not make us like the other nations of the earth, nor did God place us with the other families of the globe.  God did not place our portion with theirs, nor did God set our fate with that of the many. 


וַאֲנַֽחְנוּ כּוֹרְעִים וּמִשְׁתַּחֲוִים וּמוֹדִים, לִפְנֵי מֶֽלֶךְ, מַלְכֵי הַמְּלָכִים, הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא.

Vaanachnu kor'im umishtachavim umodim, lifnei melech malchei ham'lachim, hakadosh baruch hu.

Therefore, we bend the knee, bow low, and offer thanks to the Sovereign God, Ruler of All, The Holy One who is Blessed.

Shehu noteh shamayim v'yoseid  aretz, umoshav y'karo bashamayim mima-al, ush'chinat uzo b'gav'hei m'romim, hu eloheinu ein od. Emet malkeinu, efes zulato,  kakatuv b'torato: V'yadata hayom vahasheivota el l'vavecha, ki Adonai hu ha-elohim bashamam mima-al, v'al ha-aretz mitachat, ein od.

 

God stretched forth the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth.  God’s glory dwells in the heavens beyond, while God’s powerful presence rises above the lofty peaks.  This is our God.  There is no other.  Truly, there is nothing that can be compared to our Divine Ruler.  As it appears in God’s holy Torah, “This day, know and accept with your heart and mind that the Eternal is God in the heavens above and on the earth below.  There is no other!” (Deuteronomy 4:39)

Avodah

 

Today as we look forward to a world forgiven and redeemed, we recall the prayers of our people in the days when the Temple stood proudly in Jerusalem.

There our people would gather and, through psalms chanted by the Levites, through rituals and sacrifices performed by the Cohanim, and through the prayers of the heart, experience the transforming miracle of spiritual rebirth through teshuvah, “repentance,” and selichah, “forgiveness.”


The Cohein Gadol, “High Priest”, would prepare himself spiritually for the great day.  He would purify himself ritually, review with the sages the laws and customs of the holiday, and, with the aid of his fellow priests, don the special vestments for the festival.

This was truly an awesome day.  Yom Kippur was the one time of the year when the Cohein Gadol would enter the Holy of Holies, the sacred heart of the Temple, in a cloud of incense.  It was the only day on which he would pronounce God’s Four-Lettered name.  

Two goats were brought before him.  By the casting of lots, one was selected for sacrifice and the other was sent, symbolically bearing our ancestors’ transgressions, into the wilderness. 

The Cohein Gadol offered prayers of confession and repentance three times – once for himself and his household, once for the priestly clan, and once for all the people of Israel.  

When the congregation heard him pronounce the Shem ha-Meforash, the sacred Four-Lettered name of our God, all the people would kneel and bow, touching their foreheads to the ground, and declare, “Baruch sheim k'vod malchuto l'olam va-ed” – “Blessed be the glorious name of God’s Dominion now and forever!”

Today, we remember these ancient rites and rituals through our reading of Torah and the meditations of our hearts.

May we never forget the powerful, reassuring message of Yom Kippur, that if we deeply wish to transform our hearts, minds and souls, the way is open to us.

Through the prayers and the memories we share today, we have the opportunity to experience the same spiritual transformation offered to our ancestors while the Temple stood.

May we be worthy of this gift and may we be blessed with the strength, courage, hope and vision to take this opportunity and create a better world for ourselves, our dear ones, our community, our people and all God’s creation.

We have transgressed. We have betrayed. We have robbed. אָבִֽינוּ מַלְכֵּֽנוּ! שְׁמַע קוֹלֵֽנוּ.

Avinu malkeinu, sh'ma koleinu.

אָבִֽינוּ מַלְכֵּֽנוּ! חָטָֽאנוּ לְפָנֶֽיךָ.

Avinu malkeinu, chatanu l'fanecha.

אָבִֽינוּ מַלְכֵּֽנוּ! חֲמוֹל עָלֵֽינוּ וְעַל עוֹלָלֵֽנוּ וְטַפֵּֽנוּ.

Avinu malkeinu, chamol aleinu v'al olaleinu v'tapeinu.

אָבִֽינוּ מַלְכֵּֽנוּ! כַּלֵּה דֶּֽבֶר וְחֶֽרֶב וְרָעָב מֵעָלֵינוּ.

Avinu malkeinu, kaleih dever v'cherev v'ra-av mei-aleinu.

אָבִֽינוּ מַלְכֵּֽנוּ! כַּלֵּה כָּל צַר וּמַשְׂטִין מֵעָלֵֽינוּ.

Avinu malkeinu, kaleih kol tzar umastin mei-aleinu.

אָבִֽינוּ מַלְכֵּֽנוּ! כָּתְבֵֽנוּ בְּסֵֽפֶר חַיִּים טוֹבִים.

Avinu malkeinu, kot'veinu b'seifer chayim tovim.

אָבִֽינוּ מַלְכֵּֽנוּ! חַדֵּשׁ עָלֵֽינוּ שָׁנָה טוֹבָה.

Avinu malkeinu, chadeish aleinu shanah tovah.

Our Father, our King, hear our prayer.

Our Teacher, our Ruler, we have sinned against You.

Our Friend, our Leader, have mercy upon us and upon our children.

Our Mother, our Protector, keep plague, war, and famine far from us.

Our Partner, our Commander, cause all hatred and oppression to vanish from the earth.

Our Companion, our Shepherd, inscribe us for blessings in the Book of Life.

Our Lover, our Guardian, let the new year be good to us.

Our Source, our Sovereign, be gracious unto us and answer us.

Deal with us righteously and mercifully and deliver us.

!אָבִֽינוּ מַלְכֵּֽנוּ! חָנֵּֽנוּ וַעֲנֵֽנוּ, כִּי אֵין בָּֽנוּ מַעֲשִׂים, עֲשֵׂה עִמָּנוּ צְדָקָה וָחֶסֶד וְהוֹשִׁיעֵֽנוּ.

 

Avinu malkeinu, choneinu va-aneinu, ki ein banu ma-asim, aseih imanu tz'dakah vachesed v'hoshi-einu.

 

Avinu Malcheinu, be gracious to us and answer us, because we cannot earn Your love through what we do or profess. Treat us with Tz’dakah, “charity”, and with chesed, “love”,  and deliver us.

B’seifer Chayim

 

בְּסֵֽפֶר חַיִּים, בְּרָכָה, וְשָׁלוֹם, וּפַרְנָסָה טוֹבָה, נִזָּכֵר וְנִכָּתֵב לְפָנֶֽיךָ, אֲנַֽחְנוּ וְכָל עַמְּךָ בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל, לְחַיִּים טוֹבִים וּלְשָׁלוֹם. בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה, יְיָ, עוֹשֵׂה הַשָּׁלוֹם.

 

B'seifer chayim, b'rachah, v'shalom,  ufarnasah tovah, nizacheir v'nikateiv l'fanecha, anachnu v'chol am'cha  beit yisra-eil, l'chayim tovim ul'shalom. Baruch atah Adonai, oseh hashalom. 

May we and all Your people Israel be remembered and written in the Book of Life, Blessing, Peace, and Prosperity in Your sacred presence, so that we may enjoy a life full of goodness and peace.  We bless and praise You, Dear God, as the one who establishes peace.
